Adjustments, or manipulation as they’re sometimes referred to, are the minor movement of vertebrae in the spine. The objective of this movement is to realign vertebrae that have moved out of place for a number of reasons ranging from normal daily activity to trauma such as a car accident.
When these vertebrae are out of place, it has an overall systemic effect from muscular to the central nervous system. Without proper alignment and flow of all nerves and systems in the body from the brain, we can’t function at our peak.
An adjustment is often a pressure from the chiropractor utilizing the hands or an instrument to move vertebrae back into place. This happens with a quick movement and is often without discomfort. You may hear a noise that sounds like you’re cracking your knuckles referred to as joint cavitation. It is the release of gases such as oxygen and nitrogen from the joint.
Overall, adjustments are an excellent way to keep the body functioning at its highest level. When the body is in alignment and allowed to move properly, the body is able to respond and perform as it was designed to.
Acupuncture is traditional Chinese Medicine that uses hair-thin needles or needleless electrical stimulation at specific points on the body that have been proven effective in treatment and prevention of common ailments.
Dr. Heck performs both needle-less and traditional acupuncture. Consult with the doctor to see how acupuncture can help you today.
The following are some ailments that have been addressed successfully with acupuncture therapy:
- Addiction (alcohol, drugs, smoking)
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Chronic fatigue
- Common cold
- Digestive issues
- Eye problems
- Morning sickness
- Reproductive problems
- Sleep disturbances
- Speech problems
For some patients, simply alleviating their current pain is the ultimate goal. Stopping the pain cycle is the first step, but rehabilitation through chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises helps the patient begin to truly correct the problem and thus decrease the reoccurrence of the pain. Dr. Heck utilizes spinal exercises and full body balance therapies in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments for complete corrective care.
Kinesio-taping is designed to aid in the treatment and healing of various sports injuries, as well as improve physical performance. Taping can be used to compress or decompress an area, depending on its application. It can be used to promote blood and lymph flow, or it can be used to help drain swelling.
Common problems that can be addressed using Kinesio-Taping include:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Ankle sprains
- Bruising and swelling
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Elbow Issues
- Knee Issues
- Low back disorders
- Musicle strains
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Pregnancy postural strain
- Rotator Cuff problems
- Shin splints
Strength and Conditioning
The body is made to move. Movement is the key to healthy body. In order for the body to move properly and without pain, the muscles around a joint (elbow, knee, hip, spine, etc…) must be in balance. Muscle imbalances are common, and can be corrected through chiropractic adjustments and a properly designed strength and conditioning program. Dr. Heck has an extensive background in exercise physiology and can develop an exercise program for your specific needs when deemed necessary for optimal wellness.
Athletes and Chiropractic
Athletes have special needs and our office understands the specific nature and requirements needed to help you perform optimally.
Whether it’s during the season or in the off-season, Chiropractic care has become the competitive advantage that many athletes are now seeking.
When your body is in better alignment, joints are moving properly, and your nervous system is finely tuned, your body can function at it’s highest level. This leads to a higher level of performance, fewer injuries, and faster recovery.
Top professionals in every sport are under chiropractic care to increase health and performance. The following are just a few notable sports stars under chiropractic care.
Bodybuilding/Physique Competition and Chiropractic
As a physique competitor, you are striving for symmetry and development in all areas of your body. Lack of symmetry will be obvious on stage and cost you on the judges score cards.
To develop this symmetry, your muscles need to fire properly. Your nervous system controls muscle contraction and all other body functions. With any amount of nervous system interference, nerve impulse and muscular contraction are reduced. If your spine is not moving properly, and that signal is reduced, no amount of exercising and ‘targeting’ the muscle will work.
As an Athlete, Chiropractic care is an essential part of your program. Whether you have a body part that is lagging in development, an injury that keeps you from training properly for your next show, or simply want to perform at your best day in and day out, Chiropractic can help.
At NFCA we use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue treatment, rehabilitation exercises, and kinesiotaping protocols to help all issues related to the athlete competing in bodybuilding, figure, physique, and bikini competitions.
CrossFit and Chiropractic
As a CrossFit athlete, you spend a lot of time working on functional movements and at high intensities. You are willing to work on mobility, devote time for skill work, and address weaknesses in your training and your body. However, with many CrossFit athletes, there is one extremely important component missing from your routine: regular Chiropractic care.
When it comes to treatment, many times it takes an actual injury to persuade you to see a doctor. However, the mindset should be staying ahead on maintenance of the spine and nervous system, not waiting for pain to sideline your workouts.
Chiropractic, at its core, treats and improves brain and nervous system function. With daily activities, posture, training and trauma, segments in your spine become subluxated or restricted. Restricted or abnormal motion in the vertebrae puts stress on the surrounding tissues and most importantly, nerves. This stress directly affects the function of muscles and organs that are supplied by the affected nerve(s). Abnormal signals to and from the brain affects how your body performs both in and out of the gym.
No amount of stretching, rolling, “mashing” or mobility work will address the spinal restriction. Only a Chiropractic adjustment will fix the problem and restore proper function to the spine and nervous system.
The goal of the CrossFit athlete is continued improvement while minimizing injuries, Dr. Heck can help athletes achieve this goal. At NFCA, we provide chiropractic adjustments to correct subluxations as well as provide soft tissue treatment and rehabilitative exercises as part of your treatment plan. Once we correct the restriction, your mobility work will be more effective and you can continue performing at your full capacity.
Headaches? Try Chiropractic First.
Headaches are extremely common and one of the main reasons people seek medical help. However, headaches are not normal.
A headache, like any pain you experience, is your body’s way of telling you that something is not right. Some headaches are the result of things like dehydration or improper diet. Others may be the symptom of poor posture, eye strain, hunger, excessive noise, daily stress or muscle strain to name a few. In rare cases, headaches can be attributed to organic conditions such as brain tumors or diabetes.
Dr. Heck recognizes your neck and associated structures have a lot to do with the majority of headaches. Muscle tightness, poor posture and neck misalignments all contribute to headache pain. Any of the seven cervical vertebrae can become misaligned from excessive physical stress or even day-to-day activities like sitting at a desk all day or texting on your phone. This misalignment can irritate the nerves in the neck and may even cause minor constriction in some vessels which supply blood to the brain. When this happens, a headache can strike. Over and over. If not cared for in a timely manner, more serious symptoms may develop.
Regardless of the cause of your headache, you want relief fast! Taking a pain reliever only temporarily masks the symptoms, but it does not change the cause of the problem, which is why they recur.
At NFCA, we perform a detailed exam on all our patients to determine the exact cause of your headaches and design a treatment plan to address the cause and get you feeling better as soon as possible.
